I was wondering if it matters in regards to getting employment, salary and advancement with in the field of patent law if you have a bachelors (in the appropriate field) w/ a JD, a masters w/ a JD, or a PhD w/ a JD. In other words is it really worth spending an extra 2-3 years to get a masters or 5-6 to get a PhD prior to going to law school?

For life sciences: PhD

For Engineering: BS or MS can fly...

A lot of Ph.D./JD in life sciences started out their career as a tech specialist after Ph.D. and few years of postdoc experience. Then while working as a tech specialist and/or patent agent, they go to law school and get JD.

Also with BS in Biology and JD, you can still make it to lawfirms if you do well at law school and then you can work with tech specialists holding PhD. This has been sort of typical trend for a long time.
