They do pay for it, but I wouldn't be too surprised to see many firms start preferring people who got it done already. Until just three years ago, it was an arduous task scheduling the test, it was given twice a year in one location. Because of this, it really was just about impossible to do until after school was finished.
That isn't the case anymore, and I have heard recruiting partners at one conference indicate it may be good to get it done earlier than after law school if a student can. I am not saying this is widespread, yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if the belief does become widespread, it really is very easy to take the test whenever, wherever now.
