1L IP Summer Work Questions.

To begin, thanks to all that post on this forum. I have frequented it for about three years while deciding if pursuing IP law is right for me and have found it to be an invaluable resource. My question centers around summer work for a 1L in the bay area. I am currently attending law school at Santa Clara University. My undergrad degree is a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Utah (3.74 GPA). I also have extensive undergradate research experience (4+ years PT) in optics and semiconductors, inlcuding a patent I was awarded while working a summer at Bell Laboratories. I recently recieved my 1st semester 1L grades and am at a 3.43 GPA thus far (criminal law proved to be difficult). This summer, I am planning on taking the Patent Bar. I am wondering, based on my qualifications and law school GPA (I am hoping this does not preclude me from finding anything), how I should target my 1L summer work job search. I am extremely hopeful to find a paid position, however, if a nonpaid position may open doors down the road, I am very open for such opportunities. I have submitted some resumes/cover letters to a few larger IP firms in the bay area, but as positions in these firms are likely extremely competitive, I would like to have any input on targeting my job search. Ideally, I am open to firm positions, as well as in-house opportunties (something in a venture capital firm would be an extremely desirable opportunity). Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

JP, Congrats on getting thru your first semester. You should look at targeting small (and by small I mean solo or near solo) practitioners. After my 1L year I landed a job the day after finals b/c a solo patent atty (who only did prosecution) needed a live body to fill a space since his assistant atty was out studying for the bar. Try searching on google, nalp, or ask the career center for a good way to find solo patent practitioners (most should have websites, but finding them might be the hard part). You might not be interested in prosecution (I am not, after doing it for a summer [boring]), but it looks good on a resume, and you get to do something other than work for a criminal court judge (which pays nothing and has very little to do w/ patent law).... Also, try and use your contacts from previous jobs, or the tech transfer office at your undergrad school. Even if you work for free, it at least looks very good on a resume for 2L job hunting.... Good luck, if anything just get the patent bar under your belt and keep up your grades; w/ an EE and good GPA you should have no problem landing a 2L job.... Please let us know how things come out....
