Would it ever be possible to practice patent law on your own right out of school?  I'm guessing it would be really hard, but is it impossible?  My school offers probably 6-10 patent law/ip courses.  If I took all those, and passed the patent bar, and then some how managed to get client would it be possible?

Possible?  Of course it’s possible.  Heck you don’t even have to go to law school.  You can “hang up a shingle” as a patent agent as soon as you get a registration number.

Question for you:  are you really concerned with “possible or impossible” or “is it a reasonable or good approach?”

I recently found someone to "teach me the ropes" and mentor me part time me while I continue at my present job, with the hope of doing this full time within 2-3 years.  My first drafts have had to be extensively rewritten.  Based on this, I'd say its not realistic.

I think you're best answer might come from calling an insurance agent and seeing what malpractice premiums would be for somebody who wanted to hang out thier own shingle and practice patent law with no experience.
