Patent Agent vs. Engineer ?

Biomedical engineers are in demand these days. How does this profession compare with a Patent Agent? In other words, should a young engineer stay an engineer or will s/he make more money and enjoy better benefits and working conditions as a Patent Agent?  Assuming said engineer has exceptional verbal facility and a literal bent of mind, e.g. s/he enjoys nitpicking on the meaning of words.
If you think an agent is not so hot - as I gather from some posts - is a Patent Attorney career better than engineering? Is an attorney position sufficiently attractive to justify all the time, money and hard work needed to get there?
This is highly subjective of course, so as many of you can answer are requested/encouraged to do so.
