For those who recently took or are taking patent bar this summer,

a. In studying for the patent bar, are you actually writing down your own notes regarding the MPEP--or are you mostly trying to get a handle on things via looking things up?

b. How do you tackle practice questions--do you guys use the index primarily first?

A.  Both.  You have to know the MPEP well enough to get the majority of the answers from memorization.  If you have to look thinks up, you must know the layout of the MPEP well enough to know where to go to find it quickly.

B.  The general index should be used as a last resort.  Its an additional step that eats up time, and isn't always useful if you don't know the term associated with the subject you are looking up.

After taking multiple tests, you will memorize some rules and you will also remember where the rules you do not memorize, are located in the MPEP.

I did not use the index at all.    Do the practice tests and figure out where in the MPEP those areas are.   I think that you should get to know the MPEP more than anything else.   Make that your main goal, the rest will fall into place.

As a side note: the great thing about the search feature is that sometimes the question will state something verbatim, from the MPEP, search the term, and you will find the answer.    Of course, use your discretion when applying this because some terms are more often used in the MPEP than others.

I took and passed the exam recently (on the first try).

I just made sure I knew the answers to the test questions posted on the PTO website (so I could answer those questions quickly) and then looked up else that I wasn't sure of.  I used the Index if I didn't know where to start.

The more things you look up doing practice exams, the more familiar you will get with the general layout of the MPEP, so you won't have to use the Index as much as your studying progresses.
