Patent bar: before or after law school?

I will be starting law school full-time this Fall. I am currently working as a chemical engineer and intend to be a patent attorney after school. Since I have several months before school starts, should I study for and take the patent bar? Or should I just focus on preparing for 1L and getting the best grades I can? Would having passed the bar improve my chances of getting a job the summer after 1L? Thanks for your advice.

I would not recommend doing any preparation this summer for law school other. Preparing for and passing the patent bar would be a far more productive use of your time. If nothing else, doing so will get you a more presitigious (meaning smaller) registration number, and it just might help you get a summer job.

I second what Isaac said. I took the patent bar before I started law school this year and I have a great summer job lined up. Preparing over the summer for your 1L classes is unlikely to help you. You could read some supplements (E&Es and the like), but I have found that reading such materials when not assigned by the professor is largely unhelpful. Sometimes harmful in that it can just confuse you if the supplement presents something in a different way from how the prof presented it. Bottom line is that it won't give you much of an advantage over your classmates, if any.

What patent bar review course do you recommend? I'm a 1L now, and I plan on studying for and taking the patent bar this summer. I would like to take a home study course, and would like to spend less than $1,000. Any suggestions?
