help me out please

I am about to complete Ph. D. degree in bio science and start to seriously pursue the career as a patent agent or lawyer. This is an excellent forum and from which I learned a lot. Now I have an important questions to ask:

I have about 6 months to graduate. I have absolutely no background in law. In order not to wast time, what is realistic for me to do within these months to better prepare for my career? (prepare for patent bar exam or just do some general reading)

since it is a new new area for me and unofortunately, nobody around me could give me any advice. I appreciate any comment.

It's not clear if you are going to law school?  If you are, you need to start preparing for law school (LSAT, preparing letters, applications, etc.)

You have 6 months until you defend...  rather than study or read stuff about patent law, you need to find some real patent attorneys (call them up and ask questions about their practice/experiences) in your area.  Don't base too much on what people post here on an anonymous internet forum.  Talk to some real attorneys.  In the end, they will be your greatest resource, both for information as well as networking.  Good luck.

Thanks! I keep checking if anyone could drop me a line. I appreciate your message.  Wink

I am planning to find a job as a patent agent trainee or techspec positions at firms or company, hoping the employer could pay for law school (evening program). But my question is I am not sure that if I only want to be a patent agent, I don't need to go to law school and get a law degree. If it is true, do I need to prepare for any exam for being an agent only? Is it so called bar exam? where could I get some textbooks or any resources?

Again, don't base your career decisions on what I tell you.  You have no idea if I am a legitimate source of information.  Talk to some real attorneys or agents in your area.

To become a patent attorney, you need to graduate from law school and take the USPTO registration exam.

To become a patent agent, you need to pass the USPTO registration exam (often called the "patent bar exam").  If a firm really wants to hire you, they will often hire you as a tech. specialist and pay for you to take a training course.  These courses often cost more than $1000, and it costs over $500 just to take the exam.

However, you can always spend your own money to prepare for and take the exam on your own, if you want.  I'm not really sure it will significantly improve your chances of landing a job, although it may indicate to a firm that you are serious about the job.

So, again, my recommendation is to start talking with attorneys in your area to find out what is the job market for Bio PhD technical specialist.  I think it is very challenging these days.  Good luck.

Thanks! PT. I am now doing an internship in one of the largest biotech companies in bay area. I am trying to do what you suggested, to sit down and talk with an atterney at local site. I could imagine how challenging this job is currently. However, I really want to do something I love most. At meantime, I am also trying to connect with people at law firms and see if they are interested in hiring a person like me. Anyway, now I understand I have to take the so called "bar exam" first to register as an agent. Going to law school of not is another issue. Honestly, I love to go at some point. But first thing is first. Thank you for your advice again and if you could tell me a couple of good websites for the exam sources and requirements etc, That would be great!
