I applied through USAJobs about two months ago and I received email two weeeks ago that shows my eligibility to the patent examiner position (Electrical and Computer engineering/Physics) I applied for. When I called HR to check the status, one of HR specialists informed me to contact hiring contacts listed on the USPTO website. I called one of the SPEs from the list and the response I got was not encouraging. He told me that unless I graduated from one of the top notch schools, I should consider attending one of USPTO job fairs. I told him that I out of state applicant but his response was "you have to do it if you really want the job". He also told me that hiring is pretty much done for this fiscal year and there is no job fair that coming soon. I have two questions. First, is there any one who got interview invitation without going to job fair in the past six months? If yes, which school did you go and your GPA (if you don't mind). Second, any one who knows if there is USPTO job fair coming soon? Thanks, Antex

Hi Antex, USPTO job fairs coming up are listed on this website: http://usptocareers.gov/events.asp?action=1&eType=all You could also go to this website and set up your own interviews if they are hiring for your area of education: http://www.usptocareers.gov/jobfair/ I went to a job fair at a school and got an interview pretty quickly that way, although I didn't get hired into the first group I interviewed with for some reason. If you have any friends/relatives that work there you could have them pass your resume around to SPEs or hiring coordinators that they might know personally...that's pretty much how I got my 2nd interview, which was a phone interview, and the SPE decided to hire me.

Sorry about that. It looks like there aren't any available Interview Sessions that you can set up right now on that website on your own but I'm sure there will be some more sessions in the near future.

Mandejapan, Thank you for your quick response! I have one more question. Do you know what is going to happen to my application if they are done hiring for this fiscal year? Am I supposed to apply again or will my application still be active for next year? On the Notice of Results letter, my eligibility expires July 2008. Or do you think I might have a chance to get interview before the end of this fiscal year? Thank you again! Antex

Antex, I just sent you a PM, but my guess is that your application would be good until July 2008 as the NOR stated, and you shouldn't have to apply again. It would probably do you good though to follow up with Hiring Coordinators, SPEs, or the HR Office every once in a while, and also try to determine if you know anyone that works at the USPTO. You can use the employee locator online to search for people that you might know by their names: http://portal.uspto.gov/external/portal/emlocator
