I am a freshman at the University of Illinois studying mechanical engineering. I am thinking about eventually going to law school/being a patent lawyer. Is mechanical engineering appropriate for that or is their some other better dicipline of engineering that is better suited for law?

While this may be true and it may even be relevant by 7 or 8 years from now when the OP finally becomes a lawyer, I wonder if it is an adequate reason for studying EE rather than ME if Mechanical Engineering is more interesting to you. My impression from school was that very few people liked the two subjects equally well. It is important to do well as an undergrad to give yourself a shot at the law school of your choice.
