Patent examiner or law school?

I'm interested in going into patent law.  My statistics:  PhD in Neuropharmacology, one post-doctoral experience, been a patent examiner at the USPTO for less than a year.  Unfortunately, I'm unable to stay in the area due to family circumstances and will have to leave the USPTO quite soon.  My question:  should I stay and finish the year as an examiner before starting law school or is my experience enough (just under a year) of a draw for most firms to be interested along with the PhD and a law degree from a 3rd tier school?

I'm a little bit baffled by the time element in your question.
I don't know where you are going to school, but fall semester
already started just about everywhere.  If you are near the
1 year point now, you would be beyond 1 year by the time you
started school, right?

OTOH, your post suggests that the choice is not between
going to law school or staying at the PTO, but rather stretching your time
in the area to get some more experience or leaving the area.

yes, sorry for the convoluted question.  essentially, i feel that my options are 1) leave the area and work on getting my patent agent's license in the hopes that along with the PhD and less-than-a year's experience at the PTO will be attractive enough for a firm to hire me 2) leave the area and work on getting into law school with the same result as above or 3) finish up the year at the PTO (a much more difficult and unattractive decision) and follow up with either 1 or 2.

not knowing what the job field is currently like and not knowing whether the PTO experience is as invaluable as people say it is (and whether or not completing a full year there is essential), it has been very difficult to determine which option would work.

Unfortunately, past inquiries here about the job market
for life science related patent professionals have not gotten
great answers because the experts do not seem to be here.

I'd suggest feeling around the job market before making the
decision to leave your current position.

Of course you have some personal reasons driving your decision.
I cannot help you sort those things out.  I suspect that my
answer is not particularly helpful...
