It should be added - Even if a use is "public", it will not trigger 102b if the use was experimental. (The "experimental use exception".) If I invent a new reel for a fishing rod, and I'm still perfecting it, I can give a few prototypes to my friends to use to offer feedback so that I can fine-tune it. That's a dangerous game however; the jury/judge might decide that your use was not experimental after all and that you were merely giving them away.
