Title: Spam is BAD in the "basement" forums
Post by JSonnabend on Oct 20th, 2006, 8:05am
Sorry to post this here again, but I'm really hoping this gets as much attention as my last thread here.

Spam in the "basement forums" (those at the bottom of the list, e.g., TM and Copyright) has grown really awful.  While there are no links, spammers are posting utter garbage -- from random strings to requests for perfume suggestions -- and the numbers are growing.

Please, please make someone else a moderator so the posts can be deleted or moved to a "trash bin" forum, as I've seen some other forums do.  It might not be so bad if we could subscribe to threads, but right now, I hesitate coming back to follow-up, as it takes too long to weed through the garbage.

Hear, hear!
I have even taken to not opening suspected Spam threads just so they'll fall to the bottom of the page more quickly. I have little doubt, however, that I miss legitimate posts and, therefore, miss: (a) the opportunity to learn something and/or (b) the chance to help someone.
The time to appoint one or several moderators with the authority to zap these maldoers has come.

So that's it?  I welcome everyone to check out the trademark forum right now.  It's a joke, but not a funny one.

Maybe it's time to start a TM forum elsewhere?  I'd rather stay here, as it's a solid community.

I took a quick peek (don't usually follow the TM board).  Wow.  Looks borderline useless.

I'll do whatever I can to help.

Regards.

Much appreciated, Jim.  Unless the administrator steps up though, I'm afraid there's little any of us can do.  If it keeps up, I think I'll be leaving, maybe to start a new forum.

SPAM is increasing creeping into other areas as well.   We need to do something before we lose this board.   If the board requires a username and password that may solve some of the problem, however, people with legitimate questions will  probably not take the time to post if they have to create an ID etc.    It is getting pretty bad

Maybe it's me, but the legitimate traffic seems to be down, too.  I've only been posting since May 2006 or so.  Is it a seasonal thing?  It's a great site, I just hope it can be fixed, because it's maybe not broken, but "sick".

JSonnabend and JimIvey have been made moderators for the Forums.

If you would prefer not to be a moderator let me know.

First of all, I'm truly flattered.

Second, just killed my first spam.  Wow!  I feel powerful!  Since it's well-known that absolute power corrupts absolutely, I shouldn't fear or hide my corruption, right?  After all, it's perfectly natural....

In all seriousness, I'm very flattered and hope to kill as little as possible.  Being a civil libertarian, I really don't want to edit/kill anything arguably on-topic and hope that free exchange of ideas continues to happen here.

Best regards.

I'm flattered as well.  One final and quick request.  Could you add a "spam" or "trash" forum.  Rather than delete apparent spam, I'd rather move it.  That way, if I make a mistake, we can simply move it back.

Thanks again for the vote of confidence (although I'm not sure about this Ivey guy ;-) ).
