Title: I want to sell my idea
Post by questionmousey on Aug 21st, 2006, 8:30am
If my idea is made into a product,
- The estimate sales is over 1 million units
- Each units will probably be sold for a price of over $100 USD.
- Estimate sales figure is over $100 million USD.

Can anyone advice my how to sell my idea?

Is there a previous example of a person who successfully sell his/her idea and earn a handsome sum of money?

Well, I suppose it's not bad to be skeptical, but it's also not useful to be completely paranoid.  Most people aren't going to make any money out of even a great idea without some professional help.  Sure, you want to check credentials as much as possible, but eventually you have to choose between some level of trust or just sitting on the sidelines.

Of course, if the person is in Nigeria and wants you to wire money or share a bank account, run away as fast as you can.  As to what level of due diligence and safe certainty is required before you deal with someone, that's entirely a personal decision for each of us to determine on our own.

However, simply posting an offer to help -- even if compensation is expected -- is hardly a scam.  It's what happens after that that's important.

As Aristotle once said, "Virtue is a mean between extremes."  So, we each must find our own mean between gullible and paranoid.

Regards.

Hi, Shai...

I just read that skeptics reply. A perfect example of arrogance and stupidity combined.

Here's a critic who has no never met or spoken to me, has no concept of the possibility of professional integrity, no idea of the level at which I operate, assumes I am trying to take advantage of you--or any other patent holder, I would imagine, and that a senior business development professional such as myself with over 20 years experience and excellent references from top decision makers of major global companies should work without getting paid.

What kind of dream world is this person living in? Unless this person is fabulously wealthy and has no need to work at all, I'm sure they are paid for whatever they do. G-d help those who have to live by what must be this person's astute directives.

I will say again that I would be more than happy to help you--or anyone else--in selling/licensing your patent(s). I will also say again that I have excellent references  that will attest to the level of my work, and my professional integrity. So, if you'd like to discuss your patent with me and get an idea of how I would go about selling/licensing it, please don't hesitate to call me @ (212) 874-2835.

Quite sincerely,

Patent Marketer

Well I'll be cautious. This is a forum.. anyone could be anyone.. Damn I could be your neighbour and you never know.

For me  I'm just contacting companies and researching their background before I contact them.

Basically all I do is ask if they are interested in a new development in their field..

if they do I just revealed about 10% of my provisional patent. ANd then they offer to sign a NDA to get more info. Which gives me significant protection and I dont have to worry about rely on Grace Periods in the rare event the provisional requires some considerate fine tuning.

But yeah show me your credientials. Its too early at this stage for me to overlook any VC support

BTW the ROI of my project in YEAR 1 is greater than 50%. I dont want to say how high it is.. but lets say its off the charts.

questionmousey,

Why not build a website and try to spread the word yourself.  The other day I saw a website which was for a seat cushion you can take with you places.  I wont publicize the website since thats not what my reply is about but it really caught my eye.

If your so confident about your product, I say you let the public do the marketing for you while you sit back and watch your "millions" pour in.

Mr. Auslander.  Your caution is important.

Anyone making life altering decisions should be advised by a professional.

I do believe there are still many decent and honest people out there who are not trying to screw someone.

Smartchante. I am looking for certain products in certain markets to license and was curious about your smart bottle. Please contact me if you would like to discuss.

By the way, when I searched on-line for your smart bottle, another bottle shows up with the name Smart Bottle and it's already trademarked. By your post, I don't think that it would be yours.  You will probably want to start thinking about a different name.

Thanks

No such thing as a poor man's patent.  There is only one kind of utility patent in this country (US), and it's sufficient or it's not by one legal standard irregardless of how much you paid for it.

Hopefully, whatever you have was procured through a legitimate process and has legally enforceable rights associated with it.  Most things deemed a "poor man's patent" provide no protection whatsoever.  Hopefully, you're one of the few exceptions.

If you want to sell your idea, you really need a patent for protection of it. Do what I did. File a provisional patent for about $100. Go the to the USPTO web site and download the application for the PROVISIONAL application. Send drawings if you have any and a breif description of your idea. If you send it express mail and write the label number on the application you will be patent pending once you hand the envelope to the postal clerk. You will receive application confirmation in about 3 weeks. But you don't have to wait on it, because you are patent pending. If you have any questions you can call the USPTO and ask for the Inventors Assistance Office and they will give you all the information you need.

Kellie's suggestion will probably not afford you much protection, if any at all.  A brief description is probably not enough to actually gain a priority date in a subsequent non-provisional patent application, which means that what you filed was a worthless placeholder application.  If you want to file a provisonal application, I would suggest that you (1) enclose enough description to fully enable your idea, (2) enclose figures if necessary to understand your idea, (3) include at least one claim (this is a good idea for foreign rights), (4) make sure that what you disclose does not have any "patent profanity" -- words or phrases that could be used as limitations or admissions, such as "always", "never", "must", "that is why my idea is obvious", etc. (5) if you don't do these things, then prepare a second provisional application with these elements and file it ASAP, then claim priority to both applications by the expiration of the first provisional.

I am a patent attorney that does file provisional applications for clients, usually educational or small entity clients.  The advantage is the much reduced filing fees and the 1-year grace period to decide how to proceed.  However, my provisionals basically look like a non-provisional application (full description, formal figures, 20-50 claims, etc.)  If I file anything with less than that, I follow it up with a second provisional, usually within 6 weeks, which does look like a non-provisional.

Currently I have filed a very good patent as provisional and I want to change it to a regular application.  Would you please give me your fees and also if you can help me in selling my patents or filing infringment against my infringers e-mail me your coordinates and contact.

Thanks

If you want to keep some control over your idea and can handle the sales and marketing end, I work with inventors to get they're idea tooled up and ready for manufacturing.  All manufacturing is done overseas. I partner with inventors (they must have patent or patent pending), I handle all overseas development and manufacturing with no money out of your pocket, while the inventor handles technical from this end along with sales. I do have a salesman with 35 yrs. sales expierience who can assist for a commission on the sales end. Working this way, you get to share the lions share of the profit of your idea instead of a 2% royalty. Just another option. I do have credentials along with 20 yrs in the manufacturing sector. 386-795-6567

::) hello Shari. I have a similar situation too. I have a great idea too. It's just that they want soo much money to get it patent, portfolio, licensing. i have already paid 300.00 hundred dollar to see if there was something similar. There is nothing similiar. I wish there was some way I sould sell it to a company and they can go ahead with the production of my idea. It just cost too much money to have done and they want a percentage in the end.

Hi,
I am a crafter by trade and have an idea that I would like to sell. It seems that all us little people have big ideas and not enough money to see the idea come to fruition. I have researched this product and have not found anything on the market like it.  Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have tried the crafting companies but, they won't pay for ideas even though I know this will make them money!!! Thanks for any help...

Hi all,

I had an idea some monthes ago about an accessory which would make any car more comfortable while driving.
I have been talking with maybe 20-30 persons, 80 per cent of them told me that they would buy it.
The product will cost less that 10 dollars in shops!
And every single driver could be interested...
I will make a prototype in those day, but I don't know if I should sell my idea, or try to devellope it by myself. I bet it's difficult to deal with car's company.
And I would love to protecty my idea....
Thanks for advice, I am in NYC till january.
