Having read the postings by both attorneys, both raise valid points.  
I tend to agree with the advice of having you conduct a search first so that you can make an informed decision as to whether your idea is worth pursuing. Most Patent searches will give you an opinion as to the feasibility of your idea.
Filing for a Patent is an expensive process and more so if you have to enable your idea.

A good patent search will always enable a conclusion of the approximate feasibility of obtaining patent protection pursuant to an invention.  Patenting your idea, however, is separate from marketing it.
 
In any event, in this situation, the point was simply that, by locating and examining some patents utilizing similar technology to what she had in mind, Eve could get a better idea as to the technology that could be used to implement her idea
