Do you copyright or patent a video game idea (not the software but the idea)?

How Can I protect an idea for a video game? Is this even protectable if the game is just an idea?

Thank You For your Time & Help!!!

No you cannot patent an idea.
Idea is not an invention.
You must present the Methodology / flow as well...

for example,
I may have an idea of a device like light saber
(after watching star wars) but don't know how to implement it or to make it work... So, it still not patentable.

Dream:

You can copyright the actual code for the video game you develop.  You could also possibly patent the software (this is more complex, and has more restrictions).  You can also trademark the name of the game you create.

But, as kchuah wrote, you can't protect the idea itself... merely your actual implementation of your idea.  In the idea phase, you can do two things to protect yourself.  1.  Don't tell anyone your ideas unless you have a non-disclosure agreement signed between you and the other person BEFORE you tell them the idea.  2.  Don't tell anyone else.  Smiley

Good luck!
