I have an idea that is now in the patent pending stage and am going to search for a design firm to prototype the product.  Is a non-disclosure agreement enough protection along with the pending status? If so are there any special provisions that are recommended?

Beyond those two, I'm not sure there's much more else you can do until your patent issues.

I'm sure others here have more experience with this than I do, but I'd suggest some clause that specifies that any designs, improvements, innovations, etc. by the design firm belong to you.  They may come up with improvements during the design, and you might want to own those.

Regards.

Jim is right on the money here.  IP rights clauses are important at this, or any stage, where conflicts may arise.
