do you have any more input? what should i do?
 
im just a backyard builder, with a family. that is what this country started with and how things were discovered. i know i cant compete with the big manufactures, but would like a piece of the pie.

I'm not sure what you're asking, as Bill's given you some excellent advice.  You don't need the exact dimensions to sketch-out the design, or even to build a mock-up (if not a true prototype).  Documenting your invention is something you "should do".
 
I'll also add that whatever makes yours "different and better", to use your words, may be the point of novelty amenable to patent protection.
 
With that in mind, you also might consider speaking directly with a qualified patent attorney, another thing you "should do", as Bill advised.  We're not all expensive -- I know I'm not and I think other practitioners here are reasonable as well.
 
In my private practice, many of my clients have been "backyard inventors with families".  What sets them apart from others is they take their ideas seriously and take real steps to protect them.  A few have even become "the big guy" in the field.

so if i draw up my idea, have it notorize, will that do?  
 
just asking, because anybody can draw/ sketch something just as its released and said it was theres. or is that where you come in?
