how to prevent plagiarism?

Here's the question. My father is a scientist and he solved some very important problems. Some of his works have already been published in local scientific magazines. We live in eastern Europe and we would like to get in touch with major western universities. How can we prevent his work form being plagiarized? For example, if we want to send it to some reknown univerisity professors abroad for a review.

Thanks!

If he really has solved some important problems, by all means submit his findings for publication to a well respected internationally read journal. Nature and Science are the two such journals. Part of the publication process is a review of the paper by people in the field, and you often get to suggest which reviewers should read your paper.

There is really nothing one can do to "prevent" plagiarism, but Brian's suggestion will certainly reduce the risks that the work will be plagiarized.  Being published in a respected, peer-reviewed journal will reduce the chances that another can pass off the original work as their own, especially within the learned community who have seen the original.
