Do I need a prototype

I have an idea for an invention.  Its mechanical in nature.   I've been told conflicting information about whether I need a prototype or not before I get a patent.  Can someone clarify?

No, you don't need a prototype to obtain a patent.  But you will need to describe your invention in sufficient detail to enable one of ordinary skill in the art to practice your invention.

In general, wallflower's reply is true. However, there are some inventions that are not actually reduced to practice until a prototype is produced.

Applications for perpetual motion machines require a working prototype. Cold fussion devices may be in that catagory as well.
