Hi,

If I wanted to write a book about a company's product, such as software, because I have experience from working with it, would I need to get permission from the company to do so?

Thanks...

The problem arises with regards to segments of output, screens, etc. which you would like to display in your book.  I think that citing small paragraphs , with full reference to the source , is legitimate.

You may do one of the following, or better both of them:
1. Call the software vendor and ask for their permission and cooperation. Your help to  clients of the vendor might enhance them to cooperate.
2. Call another author of a software guiding book who published their books and ask for their advice.

It sounds like fair use to me.  The book would describe the software, not copy it.  To the extent screenshots and such are included, it's only static images necessary for the discussion; I'd say that's all fair use.

However, being right isn't always enough to avoid a law suit, so the advice re getting permission is helpful.  If you work with a publisher, they're typically used to battling these issues out.

Regards.

Thanks for responding all. I will take your advice and consult with a publisher and possibly the software vendor.
