How much of a difference does the new idea have to be from the existing idea to be patentable.

ie: let's say there's a patent on the chair. you decide that you are going to put little indentions in your chair to better ergonomically fit a persons rear end and back.  can you patent the idea to put these contours in the chair or the new chair as a whole?

Your invention must be novel and non-obvious.  There is no particular degree of how much different your invention must be, relative to the prior art, to be patentable.  Using your example - chairs with various contours have been around for many years - so at first glance it would appear that your idea is neither novel nor non-obvious.  On the other hand, if you have developed a chair with little indentations in (for example) a particular geometry or made of a particular material and you can demonstrate that those indentations confer a particular, unexpected benefit, then perhaps the invention is patentable.
