On other forums I belong to, I am notified by e-mail when a new post or reply is posted to that thread. Is it automatic here, or do I need to do something on my end to accomplish that.

I don't think this particular BB software has that capability. The administrator has mentioned testing phpBB, but I'm not sure when it will go live. phpBB has the capability you describe.
