copyright date is valid?

I created some photographs in August.
I am thinking of copyrighting them (formally).
If I do send an application now, do I have to write (c) 2008 on my photographs instead of (c) 2006. I gather there is nothing like priority date in copyrights but I feel saying (c) 2008 is useless...
