Copyright INFRINGEMENT question

How different does a copyright need to be in order to register?  Can I just change a color or a few lines?

During litigation can the person being sued claim my copyright is invalid for being too similar to others registered?

It really does not come down to how different a copyright is, you can just register it provided you came up with it on your own.   Many people can own the same copyright provided they independently created it.

I do not think that is a valid defense.  I think you can attack a registration based on deficient parts, or inequitable conduct.
