Find a copyright

How do I find out if a name is copyrighted or not ?
Is there an index of names etc somwhere ?
Can anyone point me in the right direction.

The reason I ask is that I used a name for an online shop and someone contacted me saying the name I used was copyrighted and if I didnt get it off lawyers would be involved. The message was written in a threatening manner rather than a professional manner which leads me to believe it may not be true.

It appears the person who contacted you was confused between a trademark and a copyright.  The name of a business can be trademarked.  In the US, they can be registered by the federal government and the individual states.  The US Patent and Trademark Office has a database of the registered trademarks (active and inactive), along with pending applications.

Best of luck.
