First Sale Doctorine

The First Sale Doctorine allows the buyer of a copyrighted work to give away, resell, or destroy the copy.  
 
So, I was like asking, if copyright law would prohibit me from modifying or changing the work, and then applying for a copyright for my modifications. Do you guys know if this is legal?
