Don't want to get sued

Hi, Iím looking for some advice. Here is what I am trying to do.

I want to write a play version of ď Itís A wonderful LifeĒ it would be edited down, made into a musical (I would write the songs). It would be along the same theme only with a bit more of a Christian element in it as it is for my church.  I know that the ďThe Greatest GiftĒ, which is original story, is still under copyright.

I donít plan to ever sell the script, sell tickets, or anything. Itís just for our church to perform. I donít mind having to pay royalties (Iím not look to get anything for free)

I just donít know how to go about the task of finding out if I have to pay someoneÖif so who?

Iím not looking for a lawsuit   Grin

Thanks for your help.
