Don't want to get sued

Hi, I’m looking for some advice. Here is what I am trying to do.

I want to write a play version of “ It’s A wonderful Life” it would be edited down, made into a musical (I would write the songs). It would be along the same theme only with a bit more of a Christian element in it as it is for my church.  I know that the “The Greatest Gift”, which is original story, is still under copyright.

I don’t plan to ever sell the script, sell tickets, or anything. It’s just for our church to perform. I don’t mind having to pay royalties (I’m not look to get anything for free)

I just don’t know how to go about the task of finding out if I have to pay someone…if so who?

I’m not looking for a lawsuit   Grin

Thanks for your help.
