Making a  video with music/sounds by others

My friend and I have been making some movies for fun, but we were wondering about copyright infringement. Right now, we are just making short videos and putting music from movies (300, the Passion, etc...) in them. We are not making any money or sponsorships or anything like that.
But if we wanted to make a movie that we might play in public or charge for or get sponsors, what steps would need to be taken so as to not break any laws?
Thanks!

To put things in a very large nutshell, you'd need to ensure that every creative thing you used in your production was either (a) authored by or for you, (b) properly licensed to you, or (c) in the public domain.  By "every creative thing", I mean every creative thing, including among others, specific expressions of the story, music and song lyrics and video/photographic images.

If that sounds like a lot, it's only because it is.  Clearing copyrights is difficult work.  The more you create on your own (or have created for you, if done properly), the easier it becomes.

Hey Jeff- Thanks for the response. I would agree with you that making the music or finding an unnamed band would be easier/cheaper than paying for a license. What about sound effects? Do those need to be licensed? I am talking about mostly ****t noises or ones that people couldn't say "I've heard that in such and such a movie done by whoever"
Thanks again
