I fell down the rabbit hole with a troll

Help! I am trying to design a greeting card photographing trolls. I have a definite conceptual direction, and would be using them to  illustrate an idea.

It seems as though the troll has become a poster child for international copyright issues.

Yesterday I found cases supporting the fact that trolls are in the public domain.

Today I've found a more recent case stating that the original creator has been awarded protection again.

Does anyone know the current situation, and have an opinion on whether or not I could move forward?

My attempts at research:

Thanks for any thoughts you might have!!!

Just thought of another question - If I photograph one of the knock-offs of the original troll created in the 50's by Thomas Dam, (created when the troll was considered public domain), and there are either no markings or just "made in china", could I assume I would be safe? There must be 7 different companies that have produced some version of the troll. Other than Dam, I don't believe any of those companies are presently producing them and some of the companies don't exist any longer.
