I'm trying to find out who owns the rights to a particular book.  I've tried to contact the publisher (Summit Publishing Group in Arlington, TX) but their number has changed or they've gone out of business.  The author is still alive but I don't want to contact him.  How can I find out who owns this book and it's contentsHuh

You can search copyright registrations at  The book's copyright might not have been registered, in which case the search won't help.
Regardless, for most books it's fairly safe to assume that the author holds the copyrights, although this certainly isn't true in every case.  Why don't you want to conact the author?

In most cases the author owns the copyright for books and other creative writing during his/her lifetime. After his/her demise the copyright may pass over to any institution or organization with the expressed consent of the author, his/her near relative or the government.
