What do lawyers look for in Contingent Case

I have a registered copyright that is being infringed, Damages so far are are in the mid six figures. I have plenty of evidence to show this is willful.

The attorneys that have glanced at my case have all told me that i have a good case,  but, only do contingency cases of $1million or more.

The other attorneys who will take my case are not IP attorneys.

Please I would like some open honesty, of what specifically, attorneys are looking for to take a case on a contingency fee basis. Smiley

In my experience - fifteen years and counting -- there's not pat answer to when and where an attorney will take a contingency fee case.

Generally speaking, personal injury lawyers (a.k.a. "ambulance chasers") often take anything and everything on contingency.  Their m.o. is take cases and settle them quickly for small margin, high volume type of practice.

IP lawyers on the other hand, aren't usually in a position to create this type of practice.  IP cases can be very involved and often don't settle quickly.  Copyright cases are no exception.

Like many other sole IP practitioners, I personally don't take many straight contingency fee cases.  I do take hybrid fee cases at times.

Unless you're the RIAA.  Let some high school kid think they will be on the hook for $150k per song downloaded and they'll turn over the $2000 they saved up working for Mickey D's real quick.  Grin
