Reworking a book

Can anyone tell me when the copyright is up on a book of photographs?
 
I work for a visual arts organization. As part of a forthcoming project, we want to commision an artist to work through an entire photographic publication, cutting it up and collaging it back together, then republishing it under the same title.
 
Where would we stand with copright?
