A song that is finished, can it be copywritten?

I have written a song, it has a full set of lyrics. Complete melody and chord sequence.
I live in the UK, and would like to find out about how to copywrite the song as many people have heard me perform it, and also have performed it in a concert.
My friends, teachers and family all know that i wrote the song, but I cant prove it is mine in any other way.
I am really worried about losing the rights to my song, as it is a very personal one, and i put my soul into making it.
If anyone has any information on how I can legally copywrite it, please help me out.
Thankyou, Tom Garratt

Dear Tom Garratt,

My gut says that you ought to know what you are doing. The basic Copyright law has great similarities worldwide. The local method of use of the law may vary.

My understanding if the UK law is limited.

If you use the UCC copyright notice in the UK you preserve the world rights.

Lawyers, you can't live with us and you can't live without us. I do not feel comfortable going into legal discussion on a public forum.

If you contact me I can recommed the IP lawyers I use for my UK referrals. You may be able to find the people you need yourself. Lawyers, you can't live with them BUT you can't live without them.

That is all well and good, if i was able to do so.
I am not able to use lawyers at all, as my circumstances do not allow me to.
I am able to record my song at a local studio very soon if I wish to. Would that help me to copywrite the song?
And would recording it be proof enough, along with the lyrics and chords?

Dear Tom Garratt,

You seem determined to not try to protect youself. If you have any desire to protect what you do, read what I have posted and I MAY give specific answers to questions if I am around.

Trust me, Tom. The quality of your music is ample deterrent for any would-be plagiarists.
