I agree with both of the previous two posts.
You seem to want to borrow a lot from the original characters and intend to conjure up the original work. I would guess that as you borrow more and conjure up the original more, you increase the likelihood that you attract the attention of the original's owner (and I doubt they will be seeking an autographed copy of the book).
Additionally, I do not think that creating a children's book will lessen your potential liability any.

On the other hand, if someone creates an expression of an idea for talking cats on an island, that is truely their own work, they should not be discouraged just by the possibility of being sued. If it is truely their own original work which only resembles someone else's by coincidence, they probably won't get sued unless the work becomes a real hit.
