Copyright Not Renewed - public domain?

I'm trying to determine if a book is in the public domain or not.  It was originally published in 1937 and the original copyright was not renewed in it's 28th year.  However, a revised edition was copyrighted in 1960 and subsequently renewed.

Is the original work (1937) in the public domain or is the work still protected because a revised edition was copyrighted later?  I'm interested in using the original material from 1937.

Thanks for your help.

Maybe not. Even though the statutes may seem clear enough, courts seem to find exceptions to the rules.

Allegedly there was a case where a guitarist surely meant to renew (so said his heirs), but he was murdered. Don't know much about the case though.
