Title: provisional pass
Post by Sugi on Apr 11th, 2007, 10:55am
I was told that after the exam, I would either receive a "provisional" pass or a fail (along with how many questions I got correct).

I understand the passing requirement of 70%, however, with 10 questions being beta questions, one would only need to get 63 questions correct out of 90 questions.  The question: for example, if after finishing the exam, I have 65 questions correct (prior to removal of beta questions), would the computer tell me that I fail or "provisionally" pass?  In other words, would it tell me that I "provisionally" pass, then after removing the beta questions (and assuming I still have 65 questions correct), the PTO will inform me that I pass?  Or must I have at least 70 questions correct (prior to removal of beta questions) in order to get a "provisional" pass?

I suppose it boils down to the question of how reliable is a "provisional" pass and what it really means.  I would greatly appreciate your input.  Thank you.

A provisional pass means there is about about a 99.9999% (give or take a few nines) chance you passed.

i just took the comp exam, it said my unofficial score is 66%..... i dont know how this works, its there a chance i may ultimately pass? (beta questions, or crediting all answers on a couple questions?)

if anyone has info on this, id appreciate it. thanks

Plan your retaking strategy.   You did not pass.

i just took the exam on the computer and got the provisional pass... what is the next step when I get the offical results.. I am assuming this means I really did pass and that those will say I passed so then what are the next steps they are going to tell me to do.. and how long does it take to get a registration number?

Congrats, you'll get the letter from the USPTO with the good news in 4-6 weeks.

Within a week or so, you will get an official letter from PTO with the registration form.

Then you would need to send back the registration form with the fee.

Upon PTO's receipt of the form from you, your name will be posted to the public for comments for 6 weeks.

If there are no adverse comments that warrant further investigation, you are FINALLY registered.
