HELP!!!! LAW Experience

I live in St. Louis Missouri where I’ am currently finishing up a master’s degree in chemistry from Saint Louis University.  I currently work in the pharmaceutical field and would like to become a registered patent agent.  However, it appears that a lot of companies require at least one or more years of experience with patent work?  How can I obtain experience in a law firm or in-house?  Could a scientist  possibly intern or perhaps freelance on the side until I have enough experience?
