im looking into law schools and i have this banal question but its worth a shot asking. if a university has a study abroad program, is it looked down apon to take it? do you lose some of the creditibility of the university since you are not actually studying there?

I don't know specifically, but my guess would be that going abroad would not be "looked down upon," unless perhaps you get horrible grades when you are abroad. If you want to go abroad, GO! You may never have such an opportunity again. Once you are out in the "real world," and have a job, a spouse, and/or kids, it will be much more difficult to travel for a long period of time. So do it now if you want to. But it would probably be worth looking into how your school and LSAC would account for grades earned abroad in calulating your GPA.

The individual reputations of universities overseas varies in different subject. I work with the Law School at The University of Edinburgh, and we generally enjoy a decent reputation for many areas of postgrad legal study, including IP, IT and Commercial Law.
So understanding that, we have opted to launch an LL.M via distance learning. If you have family, and you want to gain a qualification from a well respected European university without uprooting everything to move there, why not consider distance learning.
As with on-campus study, different uni's have strengths in different areas. Some are good at offering self-directed study, and others offer much more hands-on tuition (as we do here at Edinburgh).
A EU LL.M may be the unique stamp of approval required to get you ahead of the others, how many lawyers boast of an LL.M from a School of Law almost 300 years old? How many more can say that they achieved it whilst reamining in employment and looking after their family!?
Of course, the OE (overseas exerience) can be as much of a draw as final award of LL.M or MSc or MBA, but distance learning is certainly an exciting opportunity.
