Trade Name Infringement

We are located in California and  have registered our business name and fictitious business statement for 15 years with the County Clerk.  
 
Another "group" has filed a ficititious name statement and published in paper under the same name.  They already know that we have been doing business under that name.
 
The head has been sent a "cease and desist" letter.  Is this sufficient?  Or do we need to file a Notice of Opposition with the court?
