I've said many times that patents (and IP generally) are nearly always essential but almost never sufficient.  What typically is needed for making million$ from an idea is the assistance of investors -- people with an accumen for recognizing fiscal value in ideas.
 
Reading over upcoming event in my area, I came across a new set of events which, by title alone, look promising to inform with respect to different types and strategies of investors.
