Groundbreaking Primary Research on Intellectual Pr

Needham, MA–based Goldense Group Inc. (GGI) announced results of its fourth biennial study, the 2004 Product Development Metrics Survey. Groundbreaking primary research in the processes, tools and systems companies use to manage intellectual property (IP) reveals the level of attention companies are now paying to this increasingly critical asset.  Increased use of a rigorous product selection process and metrics for research and development (R&D) are encouraging signs of progress.

GGI’s 2004 survey was conducted by sending questionnaires to a wide distribution of product development professionals in industry.  Replies were received from 202 companies in a range of industries. Respondents completed 75 questions covering product selection process, product election tools, IP management process, IP management tools, and top corporate metrics.  The 2004 survey report was first released in October 2004.

GGI’s research found that nearly half of companies now use the most rigorous product selection process, ultimately leading to better marketplace success and less wasted resources.  Original research on IP management revealed largely informal practices while some companies are aggressively capitalizing on their IP’s value and potential for revenue generation, through licensing and selling IP.  Usage of overall R&D performance metrics has increased.

For a detailed description of the research you should go to GGI’s web site: http://www.goldensegroupinc.com/biannual.shtml.  You can obtain selected results, an overview of the various reports, and connect to a link to purchase the detailed report results and analysis.  Goldense Group Inc. is a consulting and educational firm specializing in leading edge management techniques and technologies used by line management functions. GGI is considered one of the top small consultancies in R&D and product development in North America, and a thought leader in quantitative analysis and metrics for R&D and product development.  For more information contact Richard James at rjj@goldensegroupinc.com or call (781) 444-5400.

This does not appear to be research at all, but rather an empirical survey. The survey results are based on 202 responses resulting from 4050 questionaires: a 5% response rate.

http://www.goldensegroupinc.com/biennial/surveydesc/2004SurveyDescriptio n.pdf

Moreover, 38% of the responses came from the "automotive, chemical, electronics, industrial, or medical products industries" - which means a whopping 62% came from other unnamed industries.

Considering that there are substantial differences in how the named industries should approach IP management, I am hard pressed to see how these survey results could be statistically significant for any individual company.

The report may make for interesting reading, but it does appear to me to be somewhat less interesting than advertised.

I am always skeptically about the methods used for these things.  Results are skewed and the analysis is generally weak.
