Who owns the IP of original paintings?

I own a number of original paintings, drawings and sculptures which I have bought either directly from the artist or from third parties. I wish to reproduce some of the images on cards and sell them. Do the originating artists have any claim on the profits?

Possibly and probably the originating artists have a claim on *all* of the profits. Ownership of the work is separate from the ownership of the copyright of the work. If you did not get a transfer of the ownership of the coyright in writing, you don't have the right to make copies and the artist does.

I know of a fairly large local company that went out and bought an original piece of artwork from a local artist with the intention of using copies of the artwork as its new company logo. They were a bit shocked to learn that they needed a proper license from the artist. The artist, of course, was willing to provide the license -- at no small cost -- once the company went back to her and asked.
