: : Looking for information on copyrighting quilt patterns. Specifically patterns that have been modified by method of construction, design,tr quiltmaking and for selling the item when it is completed.. : Where can one find out about the copyrights of a quilt pattern - when you make one from a purchased pattern or a book and then complete it - and then you want to sell it. : Thank you : Any help that you could give would be very much appreciated. That's a nice question that I will not take professional responsibility for without a retainer ans research. Your modifications conceivably may be patentable if there is structure or method involved or may be design patentable or you have copyright, rights in what you have created, even if what you create is a copyright infringement, you own and can register a copyright on the design you create. What is not clear to me as to the facts and the law at this time is if there is any risk in "selling" the quilts you make out of patterns from a book. I do not want to frighten you, but my gut tells me there is at least a technical copyright infringement risk in doing that even if the design is registerable to you as your copyright on what you have created.
