Rudolph's Second Toy Run[ Follow Ups ] [ Post Followup ] [ Copyright Forum ] [ FAQ ] Posted by John P. on November 14, 2003 at 08:23:05:
I am an elementary school physical education teacher. 8 years ago I told a story to my students about Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer as a way to bring to life a fleeing and chasing game. We called the game "Rudolph vs. The Lean and Mean Reindeer Team". Over the years I embellished the story and found that it was very popular with my students. I Decided to put the story down on paper and each year pulled it out and refined it around Xmas time. The story takes off at the Xmas after the famous foggy night. The story focusses on Rudolph and his nose and how exercise and proper diet can help one to overcome a physical handicap. I use the traditional North Pole characters, Santa, the reindeer team, Mrs. Claus, etc. Well, the story has become an 8000 word short story and I would like to attempt to publish the work. I am ready to send it off but then someone said, what about copyright? I have attempted to find some answers, but short of hiring a copyright lawyer, I have come up empty. Is Rudolph in the public domain? If not, what do I need to do to get permission to use his character traits in my story? Can anyone help? I would certainly appreciate anything?
