: : : Mr Auslander,
: : : Thank you for a prompt reply. My girlfreind binds custom hand bound jurnals. A freind of a freind of ours had purchased a slide of a Van Gough that had been taken some time ago at a musuem with permiision from the museum. It had a certifiacte validateing it's origin, but said nothing about reproduction. We wanted to use this image and other images he has on her jurnal covers. He was unsure weather we had to have permission from the curator at the museum, but I thought I would ask here before calling over sea's.

: : : Thank you,
: : : J

: : : P.s. These jurnals will not be marketed or sold at high volumes, just on a private level, and in some local stores.

: : Dear J,
: : From what you say, reproduction might be safe. I would not dare give an opinion without going over the fact and double checking the the law.

: What if someone just wanted to print some post cards with a V. Van Gough on it; and the image is being taken from the internet, for the purpose of mass distribution(sale)?

Dear Mr. Thomas,
You are Playing with fire. The Van Gough image, as painted is in the public domain but, in my opinion, that does not give someone the right to make a reproduce an image of what I own.
The images that are created are protectable under the copyright law.
