copywright laws on photocopies

This is probably an easy one. I need to know if a
teacher can photocopy an entire play and distribute it
to the class to read. It will not be performed and
no money would be generated. The copies would only be
for educational uses only.

I have always been told that this is illegal, (although
most teachers do it anyway) but I am editing a text-
book that is suggesting that teachers do this, so I need
to know if they are suggesting something that even
legal, much less moral.
