: If I own a music record (circa 1979) and I also own the CD version of the same record, do copyright laws permit me to transfer the record to CD (via my computer) for my own private listening? My record sounds better than the CD release. With all the press about music, DCMA and the like, I'm confused.

Dear Mr. Allen,
Without taking professional responsibility and without research, it is my belief that you propose is a copyright infringement. I would not counsel you to do what you refer to but there is a reality that it would be unlikely that what you have done would be discovered and the damages or even the cost of an injunction against you would seem unlikely.
The copyright holders prefer to be able to stop big fish that dimish there income and who can pay large damages. It would probably cost more that it is worth to try to stop you.
