Dear Ross,
Even if you don't know what you are doing, getting a copyright registered is not complex nor expensive. The complexity is in the subtlety, and technicality of the law and the ability to use the copyright in a way that is effective against infringers.

Getting a publisher is the hard part. If you are lucky enough to find an entree to a publisher, it would help to be aware of the contract law as well as the copyright law.
