: : Hello,

: : I'm interested in doing some old-game clones. What I will like to know is where may I obtain information on their Copyright owners. And what restrictions I've got doing them. For example if I'm creating a clone of "breakout" (or arkanoid) where and how do I get information/permision to create it? And which restrictions I'll have?

: : Thanks in advance.
: Dear Mr. Quintero,
: Game ideas can only be protected by patents. The essence of a game may be able to be reused as long as the mode of expression is not copied.
: Trademarks protect the name which can be very imporant and last forever, witness the Monopoly game. It must be at least 65 years old.

What's the difference between "the essence" and "the mode of expression" in a game? Could you give a description of the differences between them using the following games?
1. Moustrap
2. Careers
3. Masterpiece
I give these three as examples because they seem quite specific within their genres.
Thanks in advance!
